Show News !!! Some of the most exciting
and interesting news from last weekend came from Sandy
Vernon about Pickles's
(UKC CH XOEPI) weekend at the UKC Carolina Classic. It
was thrilling to read about her 4 BOBs and 4 group
placements, but then I think we have a Pharaoh Hound
first.... Sandy said it best in her own e-mail...
Four shows:
4x BOB,
3x Group 1,
1x Group 2,
4 Champion
- all flashy rosettes.
Sorry ... No Weight Pulling Championship this weekend.
Picks missed her Total Dog Title by .2 pounds. (that is
two tenths of a pound!) The prissy little thing pulled
275 pounds! But took a Group 3 in her weight pulling
class. She was smilin' and stylin' in her emerald green
harness.

The puppies are growing! here are 24 days
old .. and enjoying a little sun bath with mom. They are
out of the whelping box and in the living room in a 'transition
area'. Here they learn to get used to going in a crate
(no door at this point.) Dolly likes to nap in the crate.
And the black boy has discovered that pillows are a good
thing.

Here in
the NL, I ran Mellon
(AW'05 XOEZ) and Cadie
(CH Katobi's Final Note Cadie XO) for their very first
time coursing and both did extremely well for a first
run. Cadie even received what is called a 'Haasvast
Verklaring' which translates roughly to 'Hare (as in
rabbit) Fast Declaration', meaning she never took her
focus off the lure. This declaration entitles her to be
licensed to run in official trails.
Sorry for the little pics.
But I thought these would be good to illustrate how I 'catch'
a Pharaoh.
Notice I make sure I know where the bunny is going to
stop and I am there. But I am pointing to the bunny,
telling Cadie to "GET THE BUNNY... KILL IT!" I want her
to grab it and shake it. In my right hand, I have the
slip lead ready to go over her head, but I am showing
her that I am going to leash her up. I am just trying to
increase her desire to get that bunny, so she forgets
about what I am doing. I also make sure they are wearing
a coat, so as she grabs the bunny, I grab the coat, then
put the lead over her head! Works everytime.

Cadie getting the bunny / Mellon running
Here a little
illustration of the difference between starting a
'green' inexperienced dog, and one that knows why they
are there.
Mellon at the line was relaxed, looking around and you
can see no tension in his muscles and my hands are
relaxed.
I had to work to keep him focused straight ahead at the
bag on the ground.
You can see he is more interested at looking off to the
side at the guy who is giving me instructions. (And yes
that is mud up to my knees!)
Also, I always straddle a dog like this. For me it works
best. Some people can start a dog standing to the side,
but I often have to dig my knees in like I am riding a
horse to keep them from flailing around.

In
contrast to his father Rave, here who knows what is
going to happen. Notice him sinking into his rear and
every muscle is tense and ready to spring. Eyes focused
on that bag! And this time I have having to hang on
tight. Because he wants to go!

Saturday night I had to bath 4 totally mud covered
Pharaohs to prevent my house from looking like a pig sty
and also because Mellon and Cadie had to show the next
day! Luckily that was indoors and a lot drier.
